Jared drove the wagon into town, dropped Leah’s trunk at the church, then stopped at the sheriff’s office to report his stolen horses.

Sheriff Pete Hagen shrugged. “Your thief is long gone. There isn’t anything I can do unless he returns to town. Even then, I’d need proof.”

“I guessed that might be the case, but thought I’d report it anyway. I don’t think it’s a common horse thief who could be a threat to other ranchers. This couple has it in for me. The woman tried everything to get me to the altar, and I resisted. I just didn’t feel love for her. Then Connor shows up looking for a job, and they forced me at gunpoint into my wagon and headed for the church so I could marry Leah. Then they planned for me to have an accident and die so they could take over my ranch.”

“How’d you get away from them?” Hagen asked.

Jared took a seat and told him the whole story.

“I’m glad you came in. I’ve been hankering for a wife myself and thought about sending for a mail-order bride, but I just kept putting it off. I think I’ll find another way to find a wife.”

Jared was about to tell him about Camille, but for some reason, he kept silent.

“Do you have a mother?” Jared asked with a smile.

They both laughed.

“Sadly, not one like yours,” Hagen said.
